According to NHP(NATIONAL HEALTH PORTAL) in India osteoarthritis is the second most common rheumatological problem with a prevalence of 22-39%
It is now seen not only in aged people but also gradually started affecting the middle-aged Adults… Majorly affecting women of all categories from society in the there late 40’s… Most probable reasons includes:Unorganised lifestyle with poor nutritional status, irregular posture mechanics for longer duration, wrong exercising protocols, excessive use of knee joints in traditional sittings & day to day activities, and increasing incidence of complex trauma to bone or soft tissue ,addiction (smoking and alcohol),drug abuses etc leading to early degenerative changes in cartilage and ultimately knee pain.
So it is essential to take care before it is too late…as once degeneration settled it has no way back..
It is very important not to ignore your knee’s health which can be taken care of by doing regular exercises, avoiding high impact activities and regular checkups with an orthopaedic doctor and take the treatment as required…
If the degeneration of knees is already started consult with your Orthopaedic surgeon for the best possible treatment protocols…which initially may include medicines & exercises and may refer for surgeries like joint preservation surgeries or joint replacement surgeries{Unicondylar/Partial knee replacement / MICROPLASTY or Total knee replacement} if the stage is more advanced.
But nowadays not every patient of knee osteoarthritis require total knee joint replacement… Most of the joint replacement surgeons are opting for joint preservation options which could be in the form of lubricants, biomedical knee solutions (viscosuppliments) Chondrocyte supplementation /implantation, Alignment correction operation(HTO, etc).
One of the recent advancement and trend in joint replacement surgery is to address only that area of the knee which has suffered degeneration in the form of MICROPLASTY/PARTIAL KNEE REPLACEMENT/UNICONDYLAR KNEE REPLACEMENT
When all these solutions are not workable for a patient who probably has severe knee arthritis total knee replacement is the last way out.
